The English Premier League match between Birmingham City and Liverpool will take place at St Andrew’s on Sunday 4th April 2010, kick-off set for 15.00 GMT. Birmingham have turned their home turf into a fortress as of late, having not lost a home game in their last 12 EPL games. Furthermore, Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham, and Arsenal have all failed to take the 3 points at St Andrew’s. The Brum will certainly look to add Liverpool as another victory in their season, particularly since they have a good record against the Anfield squad.
However, it seems as if their manager Alex McLeish has one eye set on next season, as it recently was reported that Birmingham have begun to turn their attention towards pre-season for the next EPL campaign in the form of organising a friendly fixture with Hong Kong. Additionally the Reds produced one of the season’s best halves of football playing against Sunderland last week and the fans are already sensing the tension in the air and the consequences this match could have on Rafa Benitez’s future.
Birmingham City reports no significant changes as Gary O’Connor (thigh), David Murphy (hamstring) and Lee Carsley (foot) will remian on the sidelines.
Liverpool has informed that Fabio Aurelio (thigh) and Martin Skrtel (foot) remain injured, while Maxi Rodriguez, ineligible to play in the Europa League, will return.
The Reds’ historic credentials of being an EPL top-four side have been put through the ultimate test this term, with sides sucha as Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Aston Villa still in the chase to break the almost permanent domination of the so-called ‘big four’ in the English football. With the league entering the final weeks of competition, Rafael Benitez’s men will have to secure the three points to retain any real hope of rescuing some of their lost prestige.
The record indicates that in the last seven times in which these two sides have met in the EPL, the Blues have manage to scrape a point or more than one on each occasion. To add some more numbers and wood to the fire, the visitors have indeed endured rough weather on the road recently and have been able to score just once in their last five fixtures played away from home. Sunday’s game will be a new challenge for a Liverpool side which seems in a transition phase thinking on the future.
My prediction: 1-1
